Meet Dr. Pace
Dr. Justin Pace is bringing unparalleled ketamine expertise to mental health care at Ketamine Breakthrough in Southlake, Texas. As a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 12 years of clinical experience administering ketamine, Dr. Pace has witnessed its therapeutic potential in countless medical situations. His journey into ketamine therapy was driven by seeing the urgent need to better help people with mental health challenges using this powerful tool he knew so well.
Dr. Pace completed our Ketamine StartUp 101 course in April 2022 and has since established a practice that goes beyond traditional ketamine administration. Our Conversation
1. What inspired you to start a ketamine clinic or add ketamine therapy to your practice?
I saw a need to better help people with mental health challenges and ketamine as an excellent tool.
2. Tell us about your medical background and what led you to this field.
I’m a board certified anesthesiologist and was very familiar with ketamine dosing and its side effects.
3. What sets your clinic apart from others offering ketamine therapy?
Our focus is on a custom and personalized experience for each patient where they feel safe, heard, and supported so they become the person in control of their own healing.
The peaceful treatment environment at Ketamine Breakthrough, where Dr. Pace and his coaching team guide patients through personalized, intention-focused ketamine experiences.
4. How do you determine if someone is a good candidate for ketamine therapy?
We have intake forms and questionnaires which help us begin to understand each person’s unique situation which is followed by a phone consultation with Dr Pace.
5. Can you walk us through what a first-time patient can expect at your clinic?
After consultation with Dr Pace, we have a checklist of recommendations we highly encourage patients to focus on prior to beginning their infusions. We have found a focus on these suggestions can help patients to maximize the benefits gained from their ketamine experiences. On the day of infusion, Dr Pace and a coach meet with the patient to discuss any questions they might have and briefly explain what they should expect. We talk to them about their intention or purpose for the session. We create a private, safe, and peaceful environment with a recliner, blankets and pillows, an eye mask, and a playlist we’ve found to help guide the experience. Dr Pace starts the IV, then the coach helps the patient to relax with guided breath work as the infusion begins. The female coach and Dr Pace stay to support the patient as needed during the session. After the infusion concludes, we like to hear about the experience from the patient and help them out to their ride. We follow up and provide coaching calls for integration afterwards as needed.
6. What types of results have you seen with ketamine therapy?
The most consistent result we’ve seen is a decrease in suicidal ideation. Of course each patient is unique. Some patients state their anxiety or depression is improved after a couple of sessions while others require a full induction series with frequent boosters.
At Ketamine Breakthrough, Dr. Pace views ketamine as a 'springboard' for lasting transformation, empowering patients to create meaningful life changes beyond the treatment room.
7. What do you wish every new patient knew before beginning their ketamine journey?
Ketamine is not the magic bullet. I see it like a springboard. Ketamine can help get you back up on your feet, but it’s up to you to make the consistent changes in your life that will bring joy, inspiration and meaningful connections with others into your life.
8. Is there a patient story that stands out, someone whose transformation really moved you?
We’ve had lots of great experiences, so it’s hard to pick one. But one that stands out was a young woman who had experienced sexual assault and suffered from PTSD. After a ketamine session, she said during the session she was able to picture the face of her abuser and she didn’t feel any fear.
